What Else Should Be Replaced
When Fitting a New Turbo?

A new turbo is only as good as everything it's connected to. Fitting one on its own, without checking or replacing the parts below, is one of the most common reasons a brand-new unit fails within weeks.

Gaskets and Seals

Old gaskets and seals should never be reused. Heat-cycled material has already lost its ability to seal properly, and re-fitting it is one of the most common causes of post-installation oil and boost leaks. A full fitting kit covers the gaskets, seals and hardware needed for the job in one go.

Oil Feed and Return Lines

If the previous turbo failed, there's a good chance the oil feed pipe is carrying contamination or debris from that failure, and the return line could be partially blocked. Flushing or replacing both lines before fitting a new turbo matters — contamination is the leading cause of premature turbo failure, and a healthy new unit can't survive on a dirty oil supply.

Air Intake and Intercooler Pipework

Check the full intake path for splits, loose clamps, or a dirty air filter. A boost leak or restriction here forces the new turbo to work harder than it should, accelerating wear from day one on parts that had nothing to do with the original failure.

Actuator and Wastegate/VNT Function

Confirm the actuator moves through its full range and, if electronic, whether it needs a calibration reset after fitting. A worn or incorrectly calibrated actuator on an otherwise perfect new turbo will still produce boost problems.

DPF and Exhaust System Check

If the original failure could have been DPF-related, confirm and clear that before fitting the new turbo. Otherwise the replacement is exposed to the exact back pressure and exhaust temperature that likely caused the original failure.

Follow the Manufacturer's Fitting Procedure

Beyond the parts themselves, the fitting sequence matters — priming the oil feed before first start, correct torque specs on mounting bolts, and letting the engine idle before driving normally all give the new turbo's bearings the best possible start.
