Common Turbocharger Failure Symptoms

Act early to prevent cascading engine damage — a failing turbo doesn't always announce itself loudly.

Critical
Blue or White Exhaust Smoke
Oil leaking past worn shaft seals enters the combustion chamber. Blue smoke at start-up or under load is a strong indicator. Replace immediately.
Critical
Limp Mode / Fault Code P0299
ECU detects underboost condition. Causes: VGT actuator failure, turbine blade damage, or boost leak. Check with OBD scanner before condemning the turbo.
Warning
High-Pitched Whine or Grinding
Bearing wear or compressor/turbine blade contact (foreign object damage). Continuing to run risks catastrophic failure and oil contamination.
Warning
Excessive Oil Consumption
More than 0.5L per 1,000km may indicate turbo seal deterioration. Also check oil pressure and drain line for restriction.
Monitor
Noticeable Turbo Lag / Slow Spool
Could indicate clogged oil feed, sticky VGT vanes (diesel), or a weak actuator before full mechanical failure.
Monitor
Black Smoke Under Load
Underboost causes over-fuelling. Often paired with fault codes. Can damage the DPF (particulate filter) if left unresolved.

Always inspect and flush oil feed/return lines, intercooler, and intake before fitting a replacement — contamination is the #1 cause of premature turbo failure.

Turbocharger Replacement — Key Steps

Follow these steps to maximise turbo lifespan and avoid warranty-voiding mistakes.

1
Diagnose First
Confirm with OBD scanner. Check oil pressure, boost pipes, and intercooler before ordering.
2
Flush Oil System
Drain old oil, replace filter, flush feed/return lines. Contaminated oil destroys new turbos.
3
Pre-Lube the Turbo
Fill the oil inlet with clean engine oil before fitting. Crank engine without starting to prime bearings.
4
Idle & Check
Idle 5–10 minutes before load. Check for leaks, smoke, and fault codes. Clear adaptations if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying a replacement turbocharger in Ireland.

1 Are these direct OE replacement turbochargers?

Yes. Every unit in this range is engineered to OE specification with factory mounting points, pipe connections, and actuator calibration. Melett-branded turbos use the same component tolerances as the original equipment fitted at the vehicle assembly plant.

2 What warranty do the turbochargers carry?

All turbos sold by DOMAT carry a 12-month, unlimited-mileage warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty does not cover failure caused by contaminated oil, foreign object damage, or incorrect installation.

3 Do you supply turbochargers for both diesel and petrol engines?

Yes. The range covers common diesel applications (HDI, TDI, DCi, CDI, TDCI) and petrol turbo engines (EcoBoost, TSI, TFSI, THP, TCE). Use the Make/Model/Engine filters, or send your engine code for a confirmed match.

4 How do I know if my turbo needs replacing or just servicing?

Scan for fault codes first (P0299, P0234, etc.). If shaft play exceeds manufacturer tolerance, compressor blades are damaged, or you have internal oil contamination of the intercooler, replacement is the safest option. A CHRA cartridge replacement may be viable if the housing is undamaged — contact us to discuss.

5 Do I need to send my old turbo back (core charge)?

No core charge applies to standard stock units. Remanufactured or exchange units may have a core surcharge — this will be clearly stated on the product listing. Contact us if you are unsure before ordering.

6 How quickly will my turbocharger be delivered in Ireland?

Orders placed before our daily cut-off are dispatched same day. Republic of Ireland deliveries typically arrive next business day. Free shipping applies to all ROI orders. Northern Ireland and EU deliveries may vary — contact us for current lead times.

7 What is the difference between a Melett and a Garrett turbocharger?

Garrett manufactures many OE turbos (especially for Ford, Renault, and Hyundai/Kia vehicles). Melett is a UK-based precision engineering brand producing full turbocharger assemblies and CHRA cartridges to OE specification, often at more competitive pricing. Both brands carry full 12-month warranties through DOMAT.
